Earlier this month, the Law Society of Scotland teamed up with Lockton and RSA to launch the Innovation Cup Competition. This marks the seventh year of a project aimed at discovering practical solutions to solicitors’ professional risks, with this year’s emphasis on leveraging technology. The competition encourages the legal community to explore how technology, especially artificial intelligence, can mitigate professional risks.
The Focus on Technology
When we think of artificial intelligence, we often consider the risks associated with using generative AI tools but should also consider how these tools might help eliminate professional risk. The potential of technology in risk management is vast, and predictive analytics can play a critical role in identifying future risks. As discussed at the Law Society’s Technology Conference last month, technology and artificial intelligence hold significant promise in addressing some of the profession’s most pressing risk management challenges. Despite this optimism, the legal profession remains somewhat uncertain about which areas of professional risk will benefit most from technological advancements.
My Own Experience of the Competition
Developing my winning idea, the Notice to Quit Calculator, involved using technology though it was created using a simple Excel spreadsheet. This calculator enables solicitors to input essential lease details, calculate the relevant notice period, and determine the last possible date for issuing a notice to quit. The tool has been downloaded hundreds of times by solicitors, according to Lockton, indicating its widespread usefulness. As a former winner, I encourage participation in the Innovation Cup for its potential to revolutionize professional practice and reduce risk.
Tips for Entering the Competition
Find Your Idea
Identifying the problem is an excellent starting point. Consider the professional risks in your area of practice and think about where errors or oversights could result in complaints or claims. Once you’ve pinpointed a problem, imagine a solution or tool to mitigate that risk. Don’t worry too much about the technical feasibility of your idea; the goal is to think creatively and propose innovative solutions.
Discuss and Develop
Before formal submission, discuss your concept within your firm. Share your idea with a senior colleague or mentor for feedback. Assess whether your idea genuinely addresses professional risks and identify areas for improvement. Revise and refine your proposal until you’re satisfied with the outcome. Remember, the submission stage is just the beginning.
Submit
Submitting your idea is a straightforward process, and you can find all the necessary details on the Law Society’s website. Entries for this year’s competition are open and will close at 12 noon on August 30, 2024. I highly encourage participation in this innovative initiative.
