New York City doormen and other apartment-building workers said Tuesday that they reached a tentative contract agreement with their employers, avoiding what would have been the first strike by these workers in more than 30 years.
Local 32BJ of the Service Employees International Union, which represents some 32,000 doormen and other staff at high-end residential properties, had been feuding with building owner and operator representatives over the terms of a new labor agreement.
The current contract is set to expire Wednesday, and workers had threatened to strike starting Thursday.
